Year 9 Activities Week Health and Social Tasters

While the rest of Year 9 'Challenged' themselves on  a Year 9 activities trip, a stalwort of students stayed behind to hold the fort at Imberhorne Lane taking part in a range of 'International Activities'. On Tuesday 28th June, these students had the opportunity to take part in different Key Stage 4 subjects, including Health and Social Care. To say these students impressed us with their 'have a go' attitude, would be an understatement. Concentrating on the Euro's in France  (unfortunately the morning after England left) and the upcoming Olympics in Rio, we looked at how fitness can be measured and monitored to improve overall health and performance. We also talked about different aspects of health that can be improved by exercise - including mental, social and intellectual health. Students carried out a wide range of physiological measurements before and after exercise such as testing their blood pressure, measuring the saturation of oxygen in their blood, BMI, peak flow and pulse rate. Students then went out to the school track and were faced with a 'Cooper Run Challenge', the objective being to score the most laps of a set distance in 12 minutes. The record was set by Fraser Gould who achieved a massive 36 laps smashing the record set in the previous session of 27. Afterwards they repeated their measurements to see if exercise had affected them in any way.
