Saturday 19th February 2011
reports by Mr J. Hutchinson

We arrived at about 1.30 in the afternoon after a good ferry crossing and a journey, free of any long hold-ups. The snow is not as deep as last year…but the deep snow last year made the journey at least five hours longer!

After having some soup and bread for lunch we unpacked and went out for a snowball fight  which carried on whilst we gradually completed the ski fitting.

Tea was Spaghetti Bolognese (not strictly an Austrian special!) and we got the students in to bed by 10pm to try and catch up on some lost sleep from the coach journey the  night before.

Sunday 20th Feb 2011

Breakfast was at 8am – still bread rolls with butter, strawberry jam, cheese or ham. This does not seem to have changed in living memory…. Did any parents come back in the 80’s?

All the students and teachers then walked across to the nursery slopes next to the Mitterlangau Hostel to meet our instructors and start skiing. The weather was sunny and warm so many of the students removed layers as they warmed up. After lunch only those that had done three or more weeks in the “advanced group”, headed off to the Hochalm slopes, all other groups continued to use the nursery slopes at Lengau. After dinner the coaches took most of us down to Hinterglemm for floodlit snow tubing…. the rest of us are here playing monopoly or typing this!

Everything is going well here – I just wish it would snow to make it easier for us all to look good skiing.

The official Saalbach resort site has information about the area. Use the "Weather/Snow" menu to see live web-cams from the main ski-lift stations. Our skiers will be using the Zwolferkogel regularly this week.

You can use a new interactive piste map to zoom in on the areas where the skiers will be this week. There are also some panoramic video sequences showing the view from the top stations.
