From the elite performers' reliance on a large support team, to the casual gym user's use of ergogenic aids, sport and exercise sciences' core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics are seen in almost every aspect of, and activity within, the sport and active leisure sector.

What will you need to do to be successful?

To study this subject as a Double Award, you will need a minimum of four GCSE subjects at Grade 9-4 or above including Science, or a Merit in Level 2 Sports Studies (a Pass may be accepted in some instances where evidence of unit merits has been achieved at level 2. This will be discussed on an individual basis).

To study this subject as a Single Award, you will need a minimum of four GCSE subjects at Grade 9-4 or above including Science, or a Pass in level 2 sports studies.

Year 12 Level 3 subsidiary diploma  - Single Award (3 units over 1 year)

Unit 1 – Anatomy for sports and exercise (Mandatory)

Unit 2 – Sport and exercise physiology (Mandatory)

Unit 3 – Sport and exercise psychology (Mandatory)

Year 12 Level 3 certificate  - Double Award (6 units over 1 year – equivalent to 1 x A level)

Unit 1 – Anatomy for sports and exercise (Mandatory)

Unit 2 – Sport and exercise physiology (Mandatory)

Unit 3 – Sport and exercise psychology (Mandatory)

Unit 7 – Exercise, health and lifestyle

Unit 8 – Fitness training and programming

Unit 12 – Sports Nutrition

Year 13 Level 3 Diploma - Double Award (12 units over 2 years – equivalent to 2 x A level)

The 6 x units from year 12 plus:

Unit 4 – Research methods for sports and exercise sciences (Mandatory)

Unit 5 – Research project in sport and exercise sciences (Mandatory)

Unit 6 – Biomechanics in action
