Maths at KS5

Maths is a rigorous subject which develops problem solving, analytical skills and logical argument, the course is designed to be a natural progression from the GCSE programme. It provides a basis for many disciplines such as sciences, engineering and finance. Maths is a good combination with A Levels in Sciences, Geography, Economics and Music.

In class, students are expected to contribute to class discussions and work collaboratively with their peers. On top of class work and homework, students are also expected to complete independent study of at least 2 hours a week to help reinforce what they have learnt in class.

Exam Information

All of the A Level content will be examined at the end of the course in Year 13. The A Level Mathematics examination consists of three papers, each 2 hours long. Two of the papers will assess knowledge of the Pure Mathematics content and the third paper on the Mechanics and Statistics content. The assessment objectives include a greater emphasis on modelling, problem-solving and reasoning, so some questions are likely to be longer with less scaffolding. This builds on the increase in problem-solving in GCSE, so students will be better prepared.

The A Level Further Mathematics examination consists of four papers, each 1 hour and 30. Papers 1 and 2 will assess student knowledge of the compulsory Further Core content. Papers 3 and 4 are chosen following options; Further Pure, Further Mechanics, Further Statistics or Decision Maths. The decision of which two optional papers will be taken depending on the strengths of the class and the teachers available.

There may also be the option to just sit AS Further Maths in Year 13.
