Computing at KS3

During their time in Key Stage 3, students will study a variety of computing topics which promote computational thinking and problem solving skills. The lessons are fun, academically challenging and tailored to the needs of each student. Some of the topics studied include how computers work, binary representation and computer networking. There is an emphasis on students developing their own programs to solve problems.

Programming skills are introduced in Year 7 using Scratch and the Python programming language.

In computing students are encouraged to be creative and use a range of different software packages to produce varied documents such as websites, graphics and animations. There is also the opportunity for creativity through the use of programs such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator and students are able to access these remotely to promote learning outside the classroom.

By the end of the Key Stage 3, students will have a strong foundation for further study of the subject and will have the skills to use technology safely and productively. Regardless of a student’s chosen career or study pathway, computing provides skills which will equip them for the future as independent and responsible users of technology.
